A contemplative film reflecting on the power of nature and the encroachment of man-made infrastructure. We enjoy the benefits of electricity and connectivity and perhaps should accept the way that its physical existence may conflict with historical definitions of idealised nature.

The Painted Screen

In this work, two video screens are presented back-to-back, such that they cannot be watched simultaneously. On one side, sound and image are used to convey a sense of romanticism. On the other, a more matter of fact world of household chores and daily routines is represented. My aim is to invite the viewer to consider two conflicting ways of viewing our lives. On the one hand, we can place importance on a more poetic perception of experience where we may feel a part of something greater than the here and now of everyday reality. On the other, we can see life as a series of habitual behaviours that give shape and order to our lives but are ultimately empty of purpose and meaning.

In truth, however, life is not so clear in its choices. We may have opportunities to immerse ourselves in the romantic with its inspiring appeal but, at other times, the more mundane activities may seem more important and more tangibly rewarding. By allowing the sound from each side to interrupt the ‘message’ of the other, I hope to express something of the muddled complexity of ideas and life priorities that many may feel they face. At times, the two approaches may seem conflicting, while at others they could be viewed as complementary in their encouragement to live in the moment.

ONEWORLD

Working with the idea of relational aesthetics, rhizomatic global structures and decentredness a three screen video piece was developed  where contributors from multiple countries helped to shape the final outcome.
